Job Summary

Responsible for planning and implementing the nutritional program within the agency, providing direct service to clients at home, and providing nutrition consultation to the health care team.  Provides in-service education programs to the professional and paraprofessional staff.  The Registered Dietitian is responsible to the Director of Rehabilitation & Intake Operations.

Functions

  1. Provides dietary services on an intermittent basis as appropriate to the client’s condition and needs.
  2. Assesses the nutritional needs of clients as requested by staff.
  3. Teaches clients, families and staff regarding special dietary regimens and nutritional requirements.
  4. Documents client teaching in the clinical record.
  5. Attends interdisciplinary case conferences as appropriate.
  6. Provides annual in-service education programs to the professional and paraprofessional staff.
  7. Evaluates all dietary teaching materials available for use by the staff.
  8. Keeps current copies of therapeutic diets available to staff.
  9. Provides nutrition consultation to individuals/groups at the Adult Health Clinics or other programs as requested by the Clinical Managers or Education Coordinator.
  10. Quality Improvement: Complies with all quality improvement practices and procedures. Encourages and participates in quality improvement activities within the program and throughout the agency as appropriate.  Advises appropriate personnel of quality problems or makes recommendations for improvement.
  11. Decision Making: Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts. Evaluates potential risk.  Utilizes sound judgment in problem solving.  Informs supervisor of difficult problems.  Utilizes reference materials to respond to unfamiliar situations.

 

  1. Personal Development: Participates in activities and education programs to maintain and advance competency in position. Participates in program/agency committees as appropriate.  With supervisor plans, implements and evaluates career goals and objectives.  Attends and/or participates in program/agency education programs.  Meets competency standards established by the agency.
  2. Environment: Assures that assigned program area is maintained as a clean, safe, adequately supplies work area and contributes to the upkeep of the agency.
  3. Teamwork: Cooperates and works well with management team members and all agency personnel in working towards agency goals and objectives. Provides both positive and negative feedback to others in a courteous and respectful manner.  Cooperates with changes in the interest of the program and/or agency needs.  Works flexible hours when needed in order to meet the needs of the agency and fulfill job requirements.
  4. Cooperation: Adheres to all agency policies and procedures.
  5. Communication: Maintains effective channels of communications with other agency programs, management, employees and visitors. Uses language appropriate to the listener.  Observes common rules of courtesy and discretion.  Maintains a calm, knowledgeable demeanor and maintains composure under stressful conditions.  Always respects employees and agency confidentiality.
  6. Quality Improvement: Complies with all quality improvement practices and procedures. Education and Experience

  1. Knowledge of therapeutic diets.
  2. Ability to adapt dietary regimens to individual clients in their homes.
  3. Knowledge of community resources.
  4. Keeps current on the latest changes in therapeutic diets.
  5. Knowledge of management of illness through therapeutic diets.

 

Qualifications

  1. B.S. degree in nutrition and/or dietetics from a program approved by the American Dietetic Association.
  2. Completion of an internship or program leading to registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  3. A minimum of two years clinical experience in nutrition and dietetics.
  4. Currently licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in the State of Rhode Island.
